5 Reasons to Become a Massage Therapist

5 reasons to work from home in 2020

Do you ever sit back and wonder if you could do something different with your life? Possibly something that allowed you more flexibility and allowed you to make a difference in someone else’s life?

If you are thinking of changing careers and want to help people, Massage Therapy is definitely something you should consider. It’s one of those careers where you can truly make a difference for people in their day to day life. Whether you help one person each day or 6, you can literally make their pain go away!

It doesn’t matter what kind of Massage business I’ve worked at in the past, 99% of the people I’ve treated are so grateful and appreciative. I rarely have angry or rude clients. In my experience, they usually come in agitated, stressed or rushed and leave happy and relaxed.

In fact, let me share a story with you.

Several years ago, when I worked at a Day Spa, I had a client come in for a relaxation Massage treatment. After she leaves the Spa, the receptionist comes back and says, “What did you do to her?!” I wasn’t completely sure what she was talking about because the lady was happy when she left my Massage room.

The receptionist told me that the client was rude before her appointment and when she came out of her Massage, she was a completely different person! All I could say was, “I just did my job.”

This was such a lovely compliment. I completely changed my client’s mood, made her happier and made her day better! This is just the best feeling ever! When you know you’ve made a difference.

I have been blessed to be a Registered Massage Therapist for over 10 years and I have personally helped over 5000 clients. I’ve helped ease their pain, lessen their stress and make them happier overall.

So, if you’re considering a career change to Massage Therapy, below are my top 5 reasons for you to join this amazing field of work.

 1. Lessen Pain

As I already mentioned up above, this is an amazing thing to be able to help people with. Chronic pain changes people. It changes their personalities, it decreases their patience and it’s just downright upsetting when the pain never goes away. If I have a chance to help someone with this horrible problem, I always will!

2. Working With Your Hands

If you love working with your hands, this is definitely the career for you! You learn how to manipulate and lengthen soft tissue to help provide relief from pain. We get to work with our hands, and while leveraging our body weight, apply pressure to perform the techniques we need to use. At the end of the day, your body feels tired the way it should and as a result, I find it helps me sleep better at night – bonus!

3. You Made Someone’s Day!

As a general rule, Massage Therapists try to keep in mind that we never know what’s going on in a client’s life. Some people who come may have had a death in their family, just got divorced, had their boss yell at them or maybe they are the boss and had to fire someone. Other people may be in chronic daily pain and had a meltdown right before they came in because it hurts so much.

Whatever is going on in their lives, we do not always know and this could be a highlight for their day or week. Whether you Massage 1 person a day or 6 people, as long as you do your job, you know those people are going home that day feeling less stressed, in less pain and a bit happier.

4. Flexible Lifestyle

Most Massage Therapists are either self-employed or contracted out for services. This means that they have more control over the hours they are willing to work. When you have more control over your day, one of 2 things happen: you either work better hours or, you choose to work longer hours.

Flexibility means choice. You can choose to have more time with friends, more time for yourself and more time with your family! It means living your life more and working less. Working smart, not hard!

Or it means choosing to work more hours for more money. This one always makes me laugh. Generally, you will never find a Massage Therapist that complains about working more hours because most of the time, it was their choice and they asked for more bookings!

5. Career Options

Imagine having the freedom to open your own private practice in your home. Maybe you want to lease an office building and make it your clinic. Or maybe you want to rent a room out of someone else’s office. You could also decide to manage a Spa or Resort if you wanted a salary job.

One of the nice things about this type of career is that YOU choose which option is best for you and YOU choose when the timing is right.

So there you have it.

No matter what you choose to do with your career, do your best to do what you love! I absolutely love the life this career allows me to live. I love the flexibility and the job itself is awesome.

So, if you are considering changing your profession and looking at something in  the healthcare industry, consider Massage Therapy.

It’s not without its challenges and stressful moments, but at the end of the day, you can be 100% certain that you’ve helped someone.  Making a difference, whether it’s big or small, is what being a Massage Therapist is all about.

    Hi,

I really enjoyed reading your posts. They drew me in when I didn’t at first think I would read them in entirety. They are logical, revealing, and inspiring. And educational, too!
My chiropractor has mentioned massage therapy to me from time to time and I have pooh-poohed it. Not any more!
And you lay out some great reasons for having your own business that aren’t necessarily mentioned by entrepreneur “gurus.”

I love my RMT and think that a career as an RMT is a great option – except it would be hard for me to get over the touching other people part 😉

    • Reply Alexis July 6, 2020 at 5:24 pm

Haha! It is amazing if you can get over that part but if not, it would not be enjoyable!

  • Reply Laura Lee July 6, 2020 at 10:27 pm

I don’t want to be an RMT, but I have to say I love my massages. I don’t get them as often as I’d like, but I’m working on getting them on regular intervals because if I don’t I’m so tense that a 60 mnute session isn’t enough to relieve the pain.

    • Reply Alexis July 7, 2020 at 4:37 pm

That’s a good idea. Have you tried 90 minutes? It’s amazing! I feel like 60 minutes is too short now with my own RMT. 🙂
